The Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Program at the College of Charleston invites applications for a full-time position at the rank of Instructor of Hebrew beginning August 2026. We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated instructor with demonstrated excellence in teaching Modern Hebrew as a world language. The ideal candidate will also be interested and credentialed to teach interdisciplinary courses that expand our current offerings in the liberal arts.
The College of Charleston has a two-year language requirement for all students, which can be satisfied by Hebrew coursework. Hebrew is also a core of the major and minor in Jewish Studies, as well as a key language in Middle Eastern and Islamic World Studies. During the sixth year, the candidate undergoes review for promotion to the rank of Senior Instructor. The position is benefits- eligible; the salary is competitive.
Candidates must have a native or near-native command of Hebrew and a strong command of English. A master's degree in Hebrew or a related pedagogical field is required, but a PhD at the time of appointment is preferred. Two years of teaching experience at the college level is also preferred. The ability to contribute to another program in LCWA is desirable.
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in Hebrew and develop classes that expand our current program offerings. The teaching load is twelve credit hours per semester to include at least two courses in Hebrew each semester.
The interdisciplinary faculty in the Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Program have teaching and research interests that include the social sciences and humanities. POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Department of Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, invites applications for a position at the rank of full or associate professor to fill the Marsha and Jay Glazer Endowed Chair in Jewish Studies. We seek a rigorous and imaginative scholar whose research encompasses one or more of the following specializations: Rabbinic Judaism and Jewish Law in Late Antiquity or the Medieval Period, Medieval Jewish Mysticism and Philosophy, or Mediterranean and Middle Eastern Judaism.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of Jewish religion, history, literature, and culture, in addition to a demonstrated commitment to a broad range of comparative and cultural studies issues—such as, but not limited to, transcultural connections and dimensions of Judaism, especially in relation to Christianity and Islam; the role of the body, gender, and sexuality; or the intersections of religion and law—that have the potential to contribute to interdisciplinary initiatives on campus in such areas as gender and sexuality or legal humanities. The methodological orientation of the candidate is open, but the candidate must demonstrate expertise in Hebrew and other appropriate languages, mastery of historical and textual methodologies, and broad training in Religious Studies. An excellent record of publications consistent with the rank of full or associate professor, evidence of a robust research trajectory, a proven record of effective teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and evidence of active participation in the field are required. The successful candidate will assume a pivotal role in advancing UCSB’s interdisciplinary Jewish Studies program, which comprises thirteen faculty members in departments and programs across the humanities and social sciences, and will also be expected to contribute to public-facing programs.

Hebrew Langauge Specialist

The University of Kansas, Program in Jewish Studies seeks a Multi-Term Lecturer–Academic Program Associate in Modern Hebrew to begin 8/18/2025. This position is a full-time, academic year appointment. The Hebrew Language Specialist teaches three courses each semester and work with the Director of the Program in Jewish Studies to develop and implement curriculum for new and existing courses, provide capstone individual study, assess and advise students, recruit new students, and organize university and public-facing Hebrew language events. Responsibilities & Duties
75% - Lecturer
- Teach six (6) courses per academic year—the equivalent of nine to eleven credits each semester — of 100–400 level Hebrew language and related Jewish culture courses, with the expectation of totaling at least 250 student credit hours per year.
- Share with program faculty responsibility for providing individual study or small group capstone courses as needed by students for degree completion.
- Provide instruction throughout the semester, develop appropriate material for class sessions, grade assignments in a timely manner, provide students with regular and precise information about their progress in the course, and give students clear information about how to improve their performance in the course.
- Acquire and maintain proficiency in use of instructional technologies necessary for course delivery, assessment procedures, and development of innovative teaching methods.
- Prepare for and attend all class meetings. In case of absence, the lecturer must arrange for online instruction or substitute assignments. Classes should not be cancelled.
- Hold regular office hours for students in the classes taught. A minimum of three posted office hours each week is required. These office hours should be divided over at least two and preferably three different days. The program associate/ lecturer should be available for reasonable appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours.
- Maintain clear records of all evaluations of student work in the course and provide regular evidence of student learning and related information to assist department in degree and program assessment.
- Comply with departmental, College and University policies.
25% - Academic Program Associate
- Take leadership in the planning, organization, and delivery of the Hebrew language curriculum at KU. The Hebrew language specialist collaborates with the Director of the Jewish Studies program to develop and implement a teaching schedule and curriculum for new and existing courses.
- Supervise and implement KU Hebrew guidelines for proper class-level placement including assessment of transfer credits.
- Administer and evaluate student language placement and prior learning.
- Develop and implement mechanisms for assessment of student progress and the overall effectiveness of the language program.
- Organize scheduled Hebrew language practice opportunities for students outside of classroom through such activities as roundtables, fields trips, and cultural program.
- Develop and implement strategies for promotion of Hebrew learning to KU students, with activities including attendance at language fairs, posting flyers, tabling events.
- Develop and maintain a program of outreach to various local and regional schools and organizations to identify and recruit prospective students.
- Share in department work by attending faculty meetings and participating in departmental committees.
